The gates are universally understood and read as totems of power. The enraged crowd rattling at the gate is a scene played out in historical and contemporary revolutionary times - whether in Iran, France, or Vietnam. The goal of this project was to excavate my story amidst the rubble of revolution and reflect on the history of my country, our struggles and the false promises of our leaders.
The Kyrgyz Republic, where I spent my formative years, has undergone three coups since gaining independence in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Each uprising has been seen as a step toward democracy, yet the recurrence prompts reflection on the lessons still unlearned. The enduring image of people scaling the gates of the Jogorku Kenesh (the Kyrgyz Parliament) during these coups underscores the cycle of political unrest. Notably, after the third breach in 2020, the decision was made to remove these gates, symbolizing a country grappling with its turbulent political history. This project seeks to delve into the recurring cycle of political upheaval in the Kyrgyz Republic.
Final Result
The audio in the 3D animation was sourced from footage of coups in 2005, 2010, and 2020, aiming to convey the violence of unrest. The final chanting, from the 2020 uprising and mentioning "Sadyr," the current president, raises a crucial question: Does today's political turmoil align with past hopes? This invites contemplation on Kyrgyzstan's leadership evolution and the nation's desired trajectory.
